Yup, it’s September
I keep hearing that September is usually a bad month for the Stock Market. True to form, all the major indexes dropped a good bit. A lot of that was the tech stocks which all of mine lost a lot especially in the morning but stayed down instead of climbing back up. I’m sure that there are more reasons than the kids are going back to school, but I don’t really know why September is historically bad. I didn’t expect it to start so soon!
More activity in Iran
One thing that is causing distress this week is that there has been more active fighting over in Iran. We’ve kind of gotten back into they hit us, and we hit them back situation where each attack is now called a retaliation for something the other did. I don’t know exactly where we are on all of that, because they don’t tell us everything but I know that stuff is happening, and that is driving the price of oil up again.
Global Economy
I used to be proud that I was part of a global economy. My store brought in items from all over the world to celebrate the many different cultures and belief systems. For us, it seemed to start with Russia. When they attacked Ukraine, we stopped getting things from Russia which is a shame because they have some beautiful customs. But trade with them was pretty much shut down at the time.
Now, it seems we have backed out on all fair trade deals and it’s getting harder to get stuff from anybody. It is certainly getting more and more expensive with the tariffs and now with the price of oil for shipping. Being a very small store, it is coming close to impossible to continue.
I thought the idea behind a global economy was to spread the ability to produce and sell products worldwide, so that everyone benefits. Now it seems that we are all fighting to be the only ones who can produce stuff. I’m not assigning blame here but it seems like the U.S. is trying to separate themselves from the rest of the world. But that’s just my viewpoint.
More going on
There are lots of other things to keep in mind. The natural disasters seem to be happening more and more. Earthquakes, flooding, tornadoes and now we enter hurricane season. We had a tornado watch for our area last night. Our phones all beeped with notices to run to the basement. Nothing happened except rain, but still it just shows that nowhere is safe.
It does show that there is a difference between the “haves” and the “have nots”. Those who have money get assistance (including financial) while the “have nots” just get left to fend for themselves. But this is happening all over the world, and not just here in the states. Nepal and Tibet just got hit with a major flood. Brazil and Argentina had earthquakes, and out west we have a drought.
I think that mother earth is mad at us, and she is showing us who is boss!
Laying low
I don’t know what kind of financial decisions to make right now, but I am not going to make any sudden moves, that’s for sure. I usually don’t anyway but I have missed some great deals by doing that. Oh well.
