The Bigger They Are…

Higher Priced Stocks get Volatile

A little while ago, I bought one share of Micron Stock. Yeah, I know that one share isn’t really worth it, but it was almost 400 dollars! I don’t normally spend that kind of money, but I thought that memory was going to be big in the AI world and I was looking for something that wasn’t CPU or GPU related. No one was more surprised than me when the stock got up into the thousand-dollar range.

Yesterday, it fell 67 dollars! This morning it’s up 37 dollars in pre-market trading. These huge swings are taking some getting used to. I used to sweat when I saw swings over 2 dollars! Lately I have seen the same kind of shifts in AMD, Intel, and other AI stocks. It’s scary!

Yesterday, while Micron dropped 67 dollars, Western Digital went up 27 dollars, AMD dropped almost 40 dollars, and Intel fell almost 11 dollars. As a “I don’t have much money” investor, these swings make me nervous. But I guess that that’s why they say that your success in the stock market is more in your stomach than your brain. When thing go crazy, your brain tells you to bail out and sell, but if you have a strong stomach and just ride it through, things work out much better.

Most of the time.

And then we have SpaceX

I didn’t get in on the SpaceX stock adventure. I thought about it. I was going to try it at 135 when it opened. Maybe I should have but even though I think Elon can probably pull this “Data Center in Space” idea and maybe even the Moon Base and Mars Base ideas, I just couldn’t get myself to buy in. I know that he has all the pieces together to make it happen. It is very exciting and I really hope it all comes to pass, but I’m 70 years old and when will I see it?

I guess if I was just doing this to make money, it would be a good investment, but I want my money to make a difference in the here and now. So, I am staying out of the space race for the time being. I’m looking for companies that have products that will do well while I can see it happen. But I think SpaceX will do well over the next 10 years, and I hope I am still around to see it, but I can’t count on that.

SpaceX started at 135 and closed yesterday at 201 and is up to 205 in premarket. (This is Wednesday, June 17th at about 8 AM). I guess there are a lot of people willing to buy into the dream, and there is faith in Elon’s ability to pull it off. Some people just want to be a part of something historic. I do too, but I’m a nervous nelly.

I still wonder…

I’m not sure what is going to happen with all these stocks. Today we may hear from the FED about the Interest Rates. I am also interested in the coming IPOs for Anthropic and OpenAI. I’m thinking that maybe I will try for Anthropic. My guess is that they will end up doing better than OpenAI but that’s just my guess. We will see what happens down the road.
