It’s a little before the stock market opens, and I have been looking around at things I want to buy. Shame on me, I wasn’t going to be buying anymore stocks for a while. Sometimes you just have to give it a rest, you know? I had pretty much decided that was what I was going to do. But there are so many great companies out there that I want to get involved in!

I had this weird thought yesterday that I want to share. Go with me on this. I’m not going to do it, but it interests me.

It pretty much a given that natural gas is going to go up. That means that my power company which supplies both electric and gas is going to start charging me more. Now, I had solar panels installed a few years ago and this year in the summer with my air conditioners running like mad, I had 3 months where my gas and electric bill was zero. In fact, I got credits (just a few cents to about 2 dollars). But now that we are approaching winter, my furnace which is gas is running which it didn’t during the summer. And the days aren’t as long so I don’t provide as much electricity to the grid, and so I will start getting bills to pay.

I had this thought. What if I bought enough stocks in my power company, that the dividends would pay my gas charges? Wouldn’t that be fun?

Well, it turns out that I would have to buy about 38 thousand dollars worth of stock for the yearly dividends to match my bills. Now I can’t afford to do that, but it’s nice to know. And really, having 38 thousand tied up but making my gas and electric bill go away, isn’t really all that bad. I just can’t do it right now.

Still, it’s an interesting thought!

I was going to look for good dividend paying ETF’s to buy though. I haven’t bought an ETF on my own as of yet. I have those two index funds that I am experimenting with but no real ETFs. I haven’t settled on which one I want yet.

I am thinking of looking at sector specific and going with healthcare ETFs but I’m not sure yet. I’m a bit wishy washy when it comes to spending money. But I am looking. Maybe I’ll do something today. If I do, I will let you know tomorrow.
